U.S. donates vehicles and equipment for securing border

The U.S. offered Moldova 110 vehicles, 105 four-wheel motorcycles and other types of equipment within a US$23 million project that will continue until August 29, 2014, IPN reports.

Interim Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the event forms part of the United States’ actions aimed at supporting the reforms in Moldova. “The donated equipment will contribute to the fulfillment of the conditions needed for Moldova to obtain a liberalized visa regime with the EU, the securing of the state border being one of the conditions,” he stated.

U.S. Ambassador to Moldova William Moser said that the American people will support the initiatives aimed at strengthening the friendship with Moldova. The cooperation at the highest level, the openness and transparency shown by the Border Police in implementing this project represent a model for the countries of the region.

Acting Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean said the Border Police covered an essential stage of the reform: a new relevant law was adopted and the approach to border security was changed strategically. “So many changes for an institution are equal to a revival,” he said.

The relations of cooperation between the Border Police, the Customs Service and the U.S. Department of Defense are based on three agreements. Following the purchase of equipment, seminars will be held in mid-May for employees of the recipient institutions.
