U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau, Kent D. Logsdon, said there are no signals showing that the Republic of Moldova is under a military threat. The situation is constantly monitored and the relevant information is furnished to the Moldovan authorities. The Biden administration supports the Government and the people of Ukraine financially and militarily, but the U.S. avoids taking any decision that can escalate the situation, IPN reports.
The diplomat noted the United States possessed information about Russia’s military intentions and anticipated the Russian invasion in Ukraine. The developments in the region are monitored daily and no threats against Moldova’s security have been identified for now.
“The United States knew that Russia surrounded Ukraine and that military actions were inevitable. However, this military invasion came as a chock for many. It is a war chosen by Putin. We make effort for our friends in Moldova to have more information about Russia’s intentions concerning the whole region. At the current stage, there is no sign of threats against the Republic of Moldova, but we will monitor the situation each day,” Kent D. Logsdon stated in the program “Thursday with Liliana Barbăroșie” on the public TV channel.
The ambassador said that his country will not directly become involved in Ukraine as such a decision would lead to the escalation of the situation all over the region. The U.S. will support the Ukrainian Government to put up military resistance and will discourage Russia by economic sanctions that can stop the financing of warfare.
“President Biden is attending the NATO Summit in Bussers and we want a lot to find ways to support the fearless people of Ukraine and the Government in Kyiv from this horrible invasion. President Biden was cautious not to do something that could escalate this war, not to make it more dangerous, but we remain committed to work with the people in Ukraine so as to stop this horrible war. We ramped up sanctions for Russia not to be able to support this war, not to have financing for this war. We were impressed by the courage and strength of the Ukrainians The U.S. and its allies do their best to support Ukraine militarily, to help it resist without escalating this war into something bigger,” noted Ambassador Kent D. Logsdon.
Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24, describing the military invasion as a special operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. According to the UN Refugee Agency, 3.6 million Ukrainians fled their country since the start of the war.
