U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau provides solutions for improving fight against corruption

The real imprisonment of corrupt functionaries will straightly lead to reduced corruption, U.S. Ambassador to Moldova William Moser said in the program “Fabrika” on “Publika TV channel.

“I know that several criminal cases were started against judges and prosecutors over corruption. The ending of these cases with real jail terms will set a precedent for the Republic of Moldova,” said William Moser.

The diplomat drew a parallel between Moldova and the United States, where over 25,000 corrupt functionaries were jailed over 20 years. However, he didn’t hear a Moldovan high-ranking official to be imprisoned for corruption acts, though they say everywhere that the country is affected by corruption.

According to the U.S. official, the active involvement of citizens is another efficient weapon in the fight against corruption. “If the citizens want better government and justice, they must become actively involved and will have them. The people must write complaints about the illegal acts of functionaries and must demand that they be dealt with,” he stated.

William Moser approved of Romania’s experience in combating corruption. Over 15 years, the neighboring country created an efficient system that started to produce results. The same is expected from Moldova after the implementation of the package of anticorruption laws.
