Members of "Urmașii lui Ștefan" ("Descendants of Ștefan cel Mare") Youth Movement ask the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, the National Anticorruption Center and the General Directorate of Education, Youth and Sport (DGETS) to get actively involved in the fight against corruption in schools. They say that in some educational establishments the phenomenon has reached alarming levels, which has a negative influence on students.
At an IPN press conference, Dumitru Roibu, the leader of "Urmașii lui Ștefan" Youth Movement" gave the example of "Gaudeamus" Public Association for supporting education, which operates under "Gaudeamus" Theoretical High School. According to Dumitru Robu, the association illegally collects payments from students, 300 lei a month, in addition to other single payments.
According to the activist, the association motivates the collection of money by the need to purchase office equipment, to carry out repairs and to cover expenses for organizing high school events. The payments are listed as donations, and students who refuse to pay are discriminated against, stigmatized, given lower grades than they deserve.
Dumitru Roibu reiterates that the legislation, the Education Code, prohibits any form of parental organization apart from educational establishments, but also any form of collection of means and acceptance of presents on the part of the teachers and school administrations. DGETS has even issued an order to this effect.
Octavian Rusu, one of the members of the organization, says that students should not suffer if parents do not have the opportunity or desire to get involved in such transactions, which he calls "scam schemes". The young man asked the administrators of the educational establishments to think twice about some provisions of the Penal Code.
Vlad Nepoliuc, another member of the organization, calls on the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research not to ignore these actions and to take measures for the benefit of the students.
