Urecheanu set to run for mayor of Chisinau

The former general mayor of the capital, leader of the parliamentary faction “Moldova Noastra” Alliance (AMN), Serafim Urecheanu, does not exclude the possibility run for general mayor of Chisinau municipality in the general local elections in May-June 2007, Info-Prim Neo reports. Urecheanu told Wednesday a news conference that AMN has several eminent candidates that could compete for this office and lead the municipality. At the moment, AMN is at the final stage of negotiations and selection of the competitor that will run for the office, the quoted source says. As Serafim Urecheanu states, AMN is ready to negotiate with the democratic forces in the Parliament and outside of it with a view to supporting a single candidate in order to avoid risks and additional expenses. The former mayor did not exclude the possibility that he could also stand as candidate for the position of mayor of the capital if he is designated as single candidate of the democratic forces or of AMN. The leader of “Moldova Noatsra” believes that the election campaign has already started, recalling the allegations of bribery launched against him by PPCD newspaper and supported by the Communist Party with help from the Interior Ministry. In addition, Urecheanu says that this time communists and Christian democrats use the same scenario that they had in 2003, when libellous articles about him were concurrently published in the “Flux”, “The Communist” and “Moldova Suverana” newspapers.
