Until foreign military troops are present on Moldova’s territory, an international monitoring in the Security Zone is opportune. Expert in the Transnistrian issue Oazu Nantoi has told IPN that the monitoring by the participants in the talks in the 5+2 format would help avoid a possible armed conflict, like the one in Georgia.

“The events that happened in Augusta 2008 in Georgia showed how opportune such monitoring is. Until this anti-constitutional regime exists in Moldova, with paramilitary troops created and directed by Russia, which enables it to cause provocations whenever it wants, the Premier’s appeal to monitor the situation directly is absolutely normal,” said Oazu Nantoi.

The expert considers that such monitoring may protect the country from possible provocations and conflicts. “The 5+2 format includes such important participants as the U.S. and the EU with the status of observers, and Ukraine and Russia as mediators. If there is political will, these states will find a suitable mechanism for such monitoring,” stated the expert.

On October 30, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca had a meeting with the Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk on the sidelines of the conference “Confidence-building measures in the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict” that was held in Germany. In his speech at the conference, the Premier asked the participants in the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format to immediately start monitoring the Security Zone. In the same conference, Yevgeny Shevchuk said the dispute should be resolved by a ‘civilized divorce’.
