University rectors in Moldova will be elected at general assemblies
The rectors of the higher education establishments of Moldova will be elected at the general assemblies of the institutions and not by the Senate as up to now.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the Government introduced the respective amendments to the Law on Education of July 1995. Minister of Education and Youth Victor Tvircun said at the meeting that these modifications are designed to ensure transparency and objectivity when electing the rectors.
According to Tvircun, not only the teachers working for these institutions will be able to apply for the post of rector, but also the candidates from outside.
Gheorghe Duca, president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, asked that these stipulations also extend to the rectors of private education establishments, with the founders of the institutions confirming them to the post.
His proposals were accepted. There was also approved the phrase of “General Assembly of Teachers and Scientists". The Governments said that the involvement of all the employees of the education institutions, including the technical personnel, in electing the rectors is inopportune.
