Unionist slogans chanted in National Opera House square

Several hundreds of people took part in the public debates themed “Consistency of Democracy in Moldova”, organised by the Union of Journalists of Moldova on Sunday, February 10. The statements made by the speakers were mainly unionist and anti-Communist. Constantin Lazar, chairman of the Association of Romanian Citizens from Moldova, said that the political project that can save Moldova is the union with Romania. “The major concern about our future, prosperity, social, economic and psychical comfort is the return to our homeland. We will feel comfortable and humans there. The school will be school, the church - church, the woman - woman and the man - man there. We do not do this against Russians and against Communists because everybody will benefit from this – the Gagauzians, the Russians, the Roma, the Socialists, the Liberals, the Communists and Voronin too,” Lazar said. Anatol Taranu, vice president of the National Liberal Party, spoke about the necessity of unifying the Democratic forces of Moldova with the aim of fighting the offensive of the regressive forces, of those that turned Moldova into an Ltd that serves the interests of a limited group of families. “Under such circumstances, Moldova would never manage to overcome this shameful status of the last country in Europe by the social-economic development and we would not be able to solve the social problems because the main resources of the country promote the interests of a narrow group of people and not of the largest part of the population,” he said. Taranu said that the great value of these meetings that take place in the square of the National Opera House every Sunday resides in the fact that they keep the flame of national and political awakening in Moldova burning. When the mass media is not free, the public space is restricted by the present government, it is very important that the people that have not forgotten what democracy is and are ready to sacrifice themselves for democracy to dominate in this country find refuges, Taranu said. Ilie Bratu, president of the Unionist Movement, said that Moldova’s key problem is what direction to follow. The Unionist Movement’s position, he says, is that the only possibility for Moldova to join the EU and NATO is to return to the motherland - Romania. “As independent state, the Republic of Moldova will never become part of the European Union,” Bratu said, stressing that the appeal that must be made from the heart of Chisinau must not be to join the Democratic forces, but to join the unionist forces, as this is the impetrative of this time. “We have time to clarify the issues – to be democrat and to be patriot does not mean the same. To be patriot in these areas means first of all to be unionist,” said Ilie Bratu, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
