The civic unionist organizations from now on will work within a common bloc called the National Unity Bloc. Such a decision was taken by the 25,000 people who, according to the organizers, took to the streets on May 16, IPN reports.

The Unionist Platform “Actiunea 2012” announced that these organizations will become involved in the election campaign and will put forward candidates on behalf of all the political parties within the Pact for Unity, Pact for Europe, which is designed to ensure a considerable rapprochement with Romania.

Anatol Ursu, the representative of the Civic Movement “Moldova’s Youth”, said it was for the first time in the last 24 years that so many people took to the streets to demand Union with Romania. “Our option cannot be neglected. We are a real force and our voice becomes more and more powerful. To success, we, those from the Square, must go from house to house to tell the people what the Union means,” he stated.

For her part, Elena Podoleanu, the representative of the Unionist Platform “Actiunea 2012”, said the Union is the only solution for ensuring a better life, without poverty. “The socioeconomic situation in Moldova, the foreign danger stalking the border and Romania’s openness show that we live a unique moment for realizing the Union, which must not be missed. We are reconquering this historical Square and demand the Union. Nothing can hinder the accomplishment of this act. The Union is the only solution,” stated Podoleanu.

The May 16 protest took place without altercations. The unionists set the next major event for July 5. It will be held in the form of the Great National Assembly. The National Unity Bloc now consists of 22 civic entities. All the public organizations of Moldova that want can join this bloc as founding members by June 1.
