Uninominal vote excludes anonymous candidates from election process, statements

By voting directly for their representatives, for persons whom they know and trust, the voters will know from whom they should ask for explanations if their expectations are not met, said participants in the public debates on the bill whereby it is proposed electing MPs by uninominal vote, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The lawmakers are the people’s representatives, but the people do not know who they vote for. There are even anonymous MPs in Parliament. We also don’t know them, but we see them and realize that they are lawmakers,” said Igor Corman, a member of the Democratic parliamentary group. Liberal-Democratic MP Tudor Deliu said the uninominal vote may bring new people into politics, but the elected representatives should be responsible towards the voters. He expressed his skepticism about the organization of constituencies in the Transnistrian district, as the bill provides. “What if the Transnistrians do not go to the polls? What will happen to the seats allotted for Transnistria?” he asked. “This bill aims to make the MPs more responsible. It seems a good bill, but it should be implemented gradually,” said the representative of the Liberal Party to the Central Election Commission Roman Andries. “Our party already proposed introducing the vote by correspondence, but we should see how our proposals can be incorporated into this bill on the reformation of the electoral system.” Vasilii Sova, of the parliamentary group of the Communist Party, said he hopes that the initiated debates laid the basis for a constructive discussion. “The PCRM has not yet taken a final decision as regards this initiative. How the MPs will be elected is not a matter of principle for us. It is important that they represent the people,” he stated. Corneliu Gurin, the representative of the Democratic Action Party, said the uninominal vote will allow the regions to be represented in Parliament and will clarify the situation as regards the ethnic vote. It will also help reduce party dictatorship The bill on the reformation of the electoral system by including the uninominal vote was put forward by First Deputy Speaker Vlad Plahotniuc, who is an MP representing the Democratic Party.
