UNICEF prepares campaign to counter discrimination and isolation of children affected by HIV/AIDS
The office of the UN Children Fund (UNICEF) in Moldova will launched a national campaign countering the discrimination and isolation of children affected by HIV/AIDS in 2009. A workshop on the development a communication strategy and a plan to counter the discrimination takes place from 10 to 11 September in Chisinau.
Its agenda contains a presentation of the situation of the children affected by AIDS, working in groups to identify the challenges related to registering the cases of stigma in medical entities and society, highlighting the media's role in countering this phenomenon and promoting a tolerant attitude in society.
Lina Botnaru, a press officer with the UNICEF bureau, has told Info-Prim Neo this campaign is aimed to fight the people's prejudices and to prevent the isolation and the marginalization of the children affected by HIV/AIDS.
Time shall pass before society adopts a tolerant attitude. In 2003, when answering the question “If a child at the kindergarten had HIV/AIDS, would you accept your children to play with him?”, 70% of parents said “no”. The UNICEF is carrying out a new research to see whether the results have changed this fall.
According to UNAIDS, the number of children infected with HIV is on a rise in Moldova. If in 2004, 6 new cases were discovered, in 2005, 13 new cases were tracked, and in 2006 – 14.
