The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has donated two ambulances to the Chisinau-based National Calamity Medicine Center, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The donation was made as part of the program of assistance for Moldova, which is aimed at strengthening medical institutions' capacities to handle emergencies.
The Land Rover Defender ambulances were made in the UK in 2010.
UNFPA Country Director for Moldova based in Bucharest Francois Farah said the units of transport will allow providing medical services of a high quality to a larger number of persons affected by calamities, especially pregnant women and children.
Mihai Pasla, the head of the National Calamity Medicine Center, said the ambulances have powerful engines, are resistant and adapted for evacuating people and providing assistance during natural disasters. Until now, the Center used trucks or other vehicles in exceptional weather conditions.
The ambulances were bought by the UNFPA through its Humanitarian Assistance Department and the UN Office for Project Services. They cost about US$70,000.
Last year, the UNFPA donated two Hunday ambulances to the National Calamity Medicine Center that forms part of the National Scientific-Practical Center of Emergency Medicine. Thus, the Center now has four modern ambulances that can swiftly deal with emergencies.
