Undergraduate dissertation and specialization exams must be kept, Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education considers that the undergraduate dissertation and, in some cases, the specialization exam in higher education must be kept. The statement was made by Deputy Minister of Education Loretta Handrabura for Info-Prim Neo in the context of a recent legislative initiative that cancels the exams at the end undergraduate studies and replaces the dissertation with a project based on professional practice. The Deputy Minister said that the undergraduate dissertation was a practice used worldwide and Moldova should not cancel it. As regards the exams, the decision should be taken by university senates. “Considering that the universities’ autonomy will be enlarged, their senates will have to decide which exams they keep and which not, but the undergraduate dissertation exists throughout the whole world and we’ll stick to it”. She explained that for some faculties the specialization exam is needed to prove the skills necessary in that field. “There will surely be some universities that will keep the specialization exam, where it is specific to the field”. The legislative initiative to cancel the undergraduate dissertation and exam was put forward by a group of Liberal MPs. They argue that the students are evaluated twice: the first time during periodic exam sessions, and the second before graduation. The MPs want to replace the undergraduate dissertation with a project based on professional practice, considering that 90% of dissertations are bought or copied and don’t improve the student’s skills or knowledge.
