Undeclared currency seized from two passengers heading for Italy

Two persons tried to cross the Leușeni customs post and the Chisinau International Airport with currency whose value exceeded the permitted limit of €10,000. In both of the cases, the money was seized, IPN reports, quoting the Customs Service.

In the first case, customs officers of the Leușeni customs post found €36,000 in the personal baggage of a 73-year-old Italian man. The man was the passenger of a minibuses travelling from the Republic of Moldova to Italy.

In the second case, customs officers of the Chisinau International Airport, in cooperation with border police officers, found €19,450 in the baggage of a passenger of the Chisinau – Rome flight, which wasn’t declared.

According to the Customs service, both of the persons said that they didn’t know the money was to be declared during the customs check.

In accordance with the current regulations, the sums larger than €10,000 must be mandatorily declared to the customs authorities or these can be confiscated.
