‘Uncompromising’ NOW should show more ability to negotiate, Dem spokesperson

Democratic Party spokesperson Vitalie Gamurari says that the future MPs of the electoral bloc NOW should show more ability to negotiate, as political pundit Vlad Țurcanu calls them “uncompromising”.

Speaking during a talk show on Vocea Basarabiei, Vlad Țurcanu has suggested he sees why the NOW members are so intransigent. In the past decade there have been at least three coalitions and the one established in 2015 ultimately saw the actual demise of a component, the Liberal-Democratic Party. “In a democracy, to serve the interests of the people, you find resources and ways to cooperate with anyone, but in a manner that is respectful towards your allies. You don’t destroy them. And the Democrats have had this constant tendency to prey on their adversaries, to annihilate them, to change and subdue them”, said Țurcanu.

In his opinion, a more “natural” and “comfortable” coalition for the Democrats would be with the Socialist Party. “I tend to believe this is what it is going to happen eventuallt”. As for the Democrats’ repeated calls inviting NOW to the negotiating table, Țurcanu thinks this is a tactic to show everybody and to Europe in particular that they at least tried, and the fault is with NOW.

Țurcanu has added that Moldova is today regarded in Europe with distrust not only because of the Democrats’ ways, but also because of “the thousands of public servants partaking in this political and administrative mess”. “Our problem is not only a party seizing all of the power, but also the great lot of public servants who abandoned professional ethics and accepted to play by other rules, bordering on illegality”.

However, Democratic Party spokesperson Vitalie Gamurari disagrees his party had any role in the disintegration of others, suggesting the problems were internal rather. Gamurari also said he wished political parties were more responsible and lived up to their ideologies and electoral promises. .

In his opinion, political parties are still in campaign mode and this affects negotiations. Rather, Gamurari thinks, the parties that have entered Parliament should understand they don’t belong to themselves anymore, and they should strive to be in the government so as to deliver on their electoral promises. “A party should do everything to gain the ability to influence things”.

“I’d like to believe that NOW did have those integrity and meritocracy selection filters and that their future MPs have the ability to negotiate. It doesn’t have to be an out-an-out coalition, you establish the format at the negotiating table”, stated Vitalie Gamurari.

In Gamurari’s opinion, negotiations are the only way, as snap elections will produce more or less the same outcome.
