UN to take part in events dedicated to Europe Day
The United Nations will join the organizers of the Europe Day celebrations that will take place in Moldova on May 12-19. According to the UN in Moldova, Europe Day is an additional occasion for promoting the UN-EU partnership, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The UN Agencies will take part in the events that will be organized by the EU Delegation to Moldova in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau, where it will present the results of the UN-EU partnership in different areas. They will stage interactive games for children and question-answer sessions and will distribute promotional materials. The representatives of UN in Moldova will go to Comrat on May 19 to present joint projects and a recent ambitious initiative for Moldova, which promotes the use of renewable sources of energy, especially biomass energy.
The UN representatives say the importance of the partnership between the United Nations and the European Union is a catalyst in promoting the European message in all the member states. Europe Day is celebrated in the world by staging exhibitions of photographs, cultural events, meetings with students, presentations and launches of joint initiatives. In Moldova, the programs, projects and initiatives supported by the UN and the EU contribute to achieving the development objectives of the country, one of which is the European integration.
“Together we managed to provide assistance to the population of Moldova’s Transnistrian region. Together we concentrate our efforts on areas where the country’s people, regardless of the social status or geographical location, need support, including local governance, human rights, children’s protection, migration, health policies, gender equality, demographic aspects, decent work, integration of the refugees, and border assistance,” UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Kaarina Immonen has told Info-Prim Neo.
Moldova regards the European integration as one of its top priorities and the UN pledged to offer it support in this respect. The UN representatives consider that during the last few years Moldova made considerable progress on this path, especially in negotiating the EU-Moldova Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement as well as the Visa Liberalization Agreement with the EU. There was also negotiated the Common Aviation Area Agreement.
The UN and its Agencies in Moldova provided expertise and assistance in implementing the European agenda in such important areas as the reform of the justice sector and the human rights, which promote convergence towards the European values and standards of Moldova. “There is yet a lot to be done in these areas. We will continue to support the positive developments in the field of human rights, which is one of the key priorities of the UN in Moldova,” said Kaarina Immonen.
Europe Days in Moldova will be celebrated in Chisinau and Comrat on May 12 – 19. The celebrations are organized by the EU Delegation to Moldova. The sponsors of the events are Sudzucker, Orange, Agroindbank Moldova, and Flor Art.
