UN resolution will be a legal instrument for Moldova, officials

The resolution on the withdrawal of the Russian troops from Moldova that was adopted by the United Nations in June will represent a legal instrument for the country, Tatiana Molchan, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.

According to her, Moldova’s request to the UN forms part of the country’s priorities for ensuring the integrity and sovereignty of the state. The goal was to have a UN document that stipulates the states’ positon on the foreign military presence in Moldova. “The objective was not only to bring the subject on the international agenda, but to also specify that the military troops stay in the Republic of Moldova against its will and this is a violation of the international law, the UN Charter,” stated Tatiana Molchan, noting that even if the resolutions do not have an immediate action as an effect, they represent a legal instrument.

Secretary of state at the Ministry of Defense Radu Burduja said the UN resolution represents a success of the Moldovan diplomatic service. The presence of the Russian troops is classed as a threat to the state’s security. “We will see how this resolution is taken into account, but for us it is very important that our wish was stated at international level and this is a beneficial move for the defense sector,” he stated. According to Radu Burduja, the number of military exercises on the left side of the Nistru rises annually by about 30%. These exercises more often interact with the Transnistrian potential and this is worrisome.

Dumitru Minzarari, programs director at the Foreign Policy Association, said this resolution is an instrument  and a step of a broader pan of action, but this plan and the next steps are not fully clear. Critics say the output of this resolution could have been higher. “It was expected that this resolution will be an attempt to score a goal, but what happened was rather the simulation of a kick, according to these critics,” he stated.

The UN General Assembly last month adopted a resolution on the complete and unconditional withdrawal of the foreign military troops from Moldova’s territory that was proposed by Moldova.
