UN High Commissioner for Refugees welcomes Moldova’s commitment to protect refugees

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, welcomes Moldova’s commitment to protect refugees and urges increased support for both refugees and host communities. This was stated during a meeting with President Maia Sandu.

According to the High Commissioner, for almost two years, the Government and people of the Republic of Moldova have shown remarkable courage, determination and warmth in welcoming, protecting and assisting refugees from Ukraine. “This is an example for the whole world. Despite the strong support received at the global level, the current situation requires an even greater level of solidarity from the international community, commensurate with Moldova’s tireless commitment”, said Filippo Grandi.

President Maia Sandu expressed her gratitude for the support provided by UNHCR to Moldova in managing the humanitarian crisis in the wake of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. As the war in the neighboring country drags on, the president spoke about the commitment to the temporary protection of refugees, according to European standards.

Earlier this week, UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, called for continued international support for the Ukraine Refugee Response Plan (RRP) to enable much-needed assistance for refugees from Ukraine seeking safety in neighboring countries, including in the Republic of Moldova.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees made his third official visit to Moldova on January 18-19.
