Thomas Hammarberg, UN Senior Expert on Human Rights in Transnistria, is undertaking a last mission to the region before delivering his final conclusions and recommendations. Thomas Hammarberg told reporters, after a meeting today with Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, that his final report will address in particular the rights of vulnerable children and people with disabilities, among other issues, and the suggestions will be made in a constructive manner. “My philosophy is that there are human rights problems everywhere, including there (in Transnistria) of course. There is a need to identify these problems and redress them in a consistent and effective manner”, said the expert, adding that he will consult other countries' experience in solving these types of problems before offering comprehensive recommendations on what needs to be done to improve lives of individuals in Transnistria. After the meeting, President Nicolae Timofti stated the authorities in Chisinau are informed of the human rights violations that take place in the Transnistrian region and about the efforts of the international organizations to remove them. “We hope that this kind of dialogue will help to resolve human rights problems”. Thomas Hammarberg's third and final mission during November 1-8 follows the visit of UN Human Rights High Commissioner Navi Pillay to Moldova in November 2011. Then a number of actors highlighted the need to pay increased attention to the human rights situation in Transnistria.
