Un-bear-able heat wave

The heat wave that's been baking Moldova since the beginning of this week has been an ordeal for many animals at the Chisinau City Zoo, but mostly for bears. Igor Polisciuc, the Zoo's vice director, told Info-Prim Neo that during the day when temperatures soar bears are given a bath every two hours to alleviate their discomfort. “We are trying to provide the best conditions we can to all animals. But many animals are having a rough time now, especially the Himalayan bear, even if we shower it quite often”, said Igor Polisciuc. Other smaller animals, besides adapting themselves to Moldova's climate, have special reservoirs where they can cool off. The Zoo is also protected by large trees which provide generous shadow around cages. “Our water spending has increased in this period, considering that animals need to be watered more often and the water in reservoirs vaporizes more quickly. Great amounts are spent on the showers given to our animals, but we don't make any economies on that”. The Chisinau City Zoo has a number of bear species, including the brown bear and the Himalayan bear.
