Prime Minister of Ukraine Nicolai Azarov has tendered his resignation, the press service of the Ukrainian Cabinet informed, quoted by IPN.
In a message, Azarov says that he took this step in order to create additional possibilities for reaching a sociopolitical compromise and for eacefully resolving the dispute between society and the government. The conflict situation in the country threatens the economic and social development of Ukraine and represents a danger to Ukrainian society in general and every citizen in particular.
“We did and do everything possible to prevent bloodshed, the further escalation of the conflict and the violation of human rights. The Government ensured the functioning of the economy and social security in extreme conditions. Even so, in order to prevent a peril to the people and to Ukraine’s fate, responsible steps should be taken,” the politician said, explaining the reasons for his resignation.
The former Premier thanked President Viktor Yanukovich for his confidence and the MPs for supporting the reforms aimed at democratizing the country in all these years. “I’m grateful to all the people who supported the Government and me and believed in the correctness of the policies we pursued. Today, the most important thing is to keep the unity and integrity of Ukraine. This thing is more important than anyone’s personal plans and ambitions,” stated Nicolai Azarov.
The protests in Ukraine started last November, after the authorities there refused to sign the Association Agreement with the EU. A number of activists and a police officer died during the confrontations between protesters and the police.
