A Ukrainian man flying to Bucharest was stopped at the Chisinau International Airport after failing to declare $50,000 in cash, the Moldovan Border Police reported.
The 41-year-old was carrying the money in his hand baggage. When confronted by the Airport officers at the security check, the man said he wasn’t familiar with the declaration rules. The Customs Service’s Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the case.
The Moldovan law requires anyone taking the equivalent to €10,000 or more in cash out of the country to declare the amount. Failure to do so may lead to administrative or criminal punishment, and the undeclared difference may be confiscated.
