The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets made a clarification about the images showing the dry bed of the Nistru, filmed in the area of Khotyn city in Ukraine. The State Agency of Water Resources of Ukraine is studying this issue and, together with the Ministry of Environment of Moldova, is in the process of finalizing the necessary actions, the Ukrainian official said when making statements for the press in Chisinau, where he is on a working visit, IPN reports.
Minister Ruslan Strilets voiced hope that an optimal solution will be identified in the near future, thanks to the efforts made by the responsible institutions of Moldova and Ukraine. “Today it is very hard to find an answer as regards the reason because the climate change impacts the water in the Nistru as well. In order to present truthful information, it is important for us to have the conclusions of experts at intergovernmental level between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. Both Moldova and Ukraine are working on an action plan,” said the Ukrainian official.
Moldova’s Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu confirmed that both of the technical teams will perform an analysis as soon as possible and will then present the conclusions.
The Ministry of Environment and Moldova’s Waters Agency informed on Monday that the Republic of Moldova is not and will not be affected by these hydrological phenomena. The situation was created due to discharges from the Nistru reservoir in April-May, the low flows caused by the lack of precipitation in the Carpathian Mountains and the return of the Nistru River to its natural bed in this region.
