Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s position on arrest of Nadejda Savchenko

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses its definite and categorical protest at the clandestine transportation on Russia’s territory of Nadejda Savchenko, who is a servicewoman of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and who was caught earlier by representatives of the terrorist armed groups deployed in eastern Ukraine. In a statement, issued to IPN by the press attaché of the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau, the Ministry says that the happenings are another proof that terrorists’ acts are planned and coordinated with the special services of Russia, IPN reports.

The statement reads that by kidnapping Ukrainian citizens on Ukraine’s territory, the Russian authorities violate not only the international law norms, but also the elementary norms of morality and decency. Such acts will not remain without an appropriate reaction on the part of Ukraine and the international community.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine calls on Russia to immediately provide comprehensive information about the circumstances in which the Ukrainian servicewoman got to Russia, to objectively investigate this situation and to punish those to blame. The Ministry also requests allowing the Ukrainian consult to have access to the servicewoman so as to provide legal assistance to her.

“We expect the Russian authorities to take measures to set free Nadejda Savchenko unconditionally and to bring her home in the shortest time possible,” reads the statement.

The Ministry also called on the international community to condemn the illegal acts of Russia. It demands exerting pressure on the Russian authorities that believe that they can do whatever they want. But this can turn into a real threat to the civilized world.
