Ukrainian Embassy denies reports of change in citizenship granting procedure
The Ukrainian Embassy in Moldova denied recent Chisinau media reports that Ukraine had changed procedures for granting Ukrainian citizenship.
According to a press release sent by the Embassy to Info-Prim Neo for further dissemination, the requirements for the citizenship application have not been changed since the Ukrainian Citizenship Law (of January 18, 2001) took effect on July 21, 2005. Nor have the procedures for processing passport applications been changed, the Embassy said.
The Embassy makes it explicit: the certificate confirming that the applicant doesn’t hold the citizenship of any other state has been a requirement for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship for many years.
Although the Embassy has always insisted on respecting the principle of singular citizenship, as prescribed by Ukrainian laws, it sometimes has to deal with attempts of acquiring Ukrainian citizenship by holders of other countries’ citizenships, especially of Moldova and Russia.
In the event a person acquires Ukrainian citizenship by fraud, that is, by presenting erroneous or false documents, the decision of granting citizenship shall be declared null and void, in compliance with the Ukrainian Citizenship Law, the Ukrainian Embassy in Moldova informs.
