Ukrainian and U.S. officials had a new meeting in Saudi Arabia and discussed the protection of energy facilities and critical infrastructure and the end of the war in Ukraine, IPN reports.
The Ukrainian delegation in Riyadh was led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who said that the purpose of Sunday's meeting was to contribute to the approach of a just peace and security, writes Reuters.
"The discussion was productive and focused – we addressed key points, including energy. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's goal is to secure a just and lasting peace for our country and our people – and, by extension, for all of Europe," Rustem Umerov posted on social media.
White House National Security Adviser Michael Waltz said the United States was talking through a range of confidence-building measures, including the future of Ukrainian children taken into Russia. "After a Black Sea ceasefire was agreed, we’ talk the line of control, which is the actual front lines," said the U.S. official.
Following phone talks between Trump and Putin last week, the Russian president agreed to stop attacks on energy infrastructure for 30 days, but shortly after, both the Ukrainian and Russian sides reported continued attacks.
A massive Russian drone attack on Kyiv killed at least three people on Sunday, including a 5-year-old child. The fires engulfed several neighborhoods in the Ukrainian capital city, injuring a number of people, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko informed, according to an announcement posted on social media.
For their part, the authorities in Moscow said that Russian air defenses shot down 59 Ukrainian drones, which targeted the southwestern regions of Russia, and that, as a result of the attacks, one person died.
On Monday morning, talks on a ceasefire in the Black Sea began between the U.S and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia, before a broad agreement is reached.
The White House confirmed that the goal of the talks is to reach a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. Although the area has not been the site of intense military operations in recent months, the U.S. suggests ensuring the free flow of shipping.
