Today marks two years since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine, two years in which hospitals, kindergartens, shops, apartment blocks, churches have been shelled on a daily basis in the neighboring country. “Today we mark two years of terror, but we also mark two years of resistance”, declared President Maia Sandu in a joint statement issued together with Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Speaker Igor Grosu.
The president noted that in these two years Ukraine has been able to stand upright and dignified, and through the heroism of Ukrainians, both military and civilians, the country defends the freedom of the entire European continent and peace in the Republic of Moldova. “We are grateful to the Ukrainians for their extraordinary courage. During these two years, Moldova understood firsthand the importance of peace and freedom. Moldova showed itself and the whole world that it chooses life and that it will always rush to the aid of those in need. Moldovans want to live in good understanding and we will do everything in our power to preserve peace in our country”, declared Maia Sandu.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean declared that the two years of war in Ukraine brought unimaginable difficulties. “But they also showed us that true strength lies in compassion, in solidarity and courage. The Republic of Moldova has received and hosted hundreds of thousands of refugees since the beginning of Russia’s war in Ukraine. For two years, despite all the challenges, there has been peace in Moldova. People in our villages and cities are safe, trains are running, planes are flying, and the Government is building roads, modernizing hospitals, kindergartens, schools, we support the opening of businesses at home”, said Doring Recean.
Speaker Igor Grosu noted that what is happening in Ukraine is terrible, and such actions must never take place anywhere in the world. “Ukraine has been invaded by Russia. And for two years Ukraine has been fighting precisely because life matters, fighting for dignity and nation, fighting for life. For two years the free world has acted as one voice, the voice of goodness. And this we will continue until goodness prevails and peace is restored”, said Igor Grosu.
Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban, too, issued a statement of solidarity with the Ukrainians. “We remain in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. We want peace in the whole world and in the country of our neighbors. And here at home, our citizens want safety, peace and confidence in tomorrow. As a sign of solidarity, today the Museum of History of the City of Chisinau and the Triumphal Arch will be lighted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag”, said the mayor.
Today marks two years since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. More than 1.4 million houses have been completely demolished or partially damaged, affecting 18 million people. Of them, six million have left Ukraine, and another nearly four million have been left homeless. Because of the war, Ukraine is now the most mined country in the world.
