Ukraine President calls on participants in Transnistrian dispute talks to recognise Moldova’s territorial integrity

The territorial integrity of Moldova should be supported clearly by all the participants in the negotiation process regarding the Transnistrian conflict, mediators and observers, including the EU, a stake-holder for which this issue has become practically a border conflict since Romania joined, Ukraine’s President Victor Iuscenco stated within his speech delivered at the 43rd Security Policy Conference (Munich, Germany). According to the Ukrainian head of state, it should be analysed the possibility to adopt a document that would confirm and guarantee this support at international level. Iuscenco added that this problem is of major importance and needs an emergency solution. The Transnistrian problem cannot be considered as a secondary importance problem, Iuscenco stated, mentioning that “we must join all our efforts to ensure an optimal and peaceful regulation of this conflict”. The Munich Conference, that took place on February 9-11, has brought together key politicians from various countries world-wide, counting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin, the EU Secretary General, and the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and others. R. Moldova was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Stratan.
