Ukraine adopts legislation allowing sanctions against 'aggressor states'

The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday adopted a law allowing the government to impose sanctions against “aggressor states” and their agents. The list of 25 potential sanctions includes a partial or full ban on the transit of all types of natural resources, a ban on the use of radio frequencies, internet and other communication, and ban on foreign economic activity and freezing of assets, IPN reports.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau said in a press release the restrictive measures adopted by the Verkhovna Rada aimed at defending the national interests of the Ukrainian citizens.

The law was endorsed by an overwhelming number of 244 MPs of the 290 present.

The grounds that can trigger the imposition of sanctions include any action by a state or its agents that pose a real or potential threat to the national interests, security, sovereignty, territorial integrity, or economic independence of Ukraine.

As the Ukrainian News reported, the Ukrainian Cabinet has already initiated the introduction of sanctions against 172 individuals and 65 legal entities from Russia for their alleged role in supporting and financing terrorism, assisting the annexation of Crimea and violating Ukraine's territorial integrity.

While the law does not explicitly provide for a ban on the transit of Russian gas, the new legislation creates conditions for establishing a new framework for regulating the supply and transit of Russian gas to Europe, including Moldova.
