Ukraine accuses Moldova of delaying transmission of land at Palanca

The Ukrainian Rada intends to set up a commission to investigate “Moldova's delay” in transmitting a portion of road and adjacent land in the vicinity of Palanca village. The subject was discussed at a broader meeting that brought together Ukrainian MPs, members of the Government and the Odessa administration, Info-Prim Neo learned from a press release issued by Ukrainian MP Pavel Ungurean. According to the press release, Odessa Governor Eduard Matviychuk expressed his surprised concern about Moldova's failure to honor its obligations as long as it received the lands promised under the agreement and gained access to naval transportation. “We don't intend to constrain anyone. But we want to point out that we too have our own interests which we'll insist on. We respect the interests of the Moldovan party, but we want respect as well”, said the governor. The meeting participants mentioned a number of problems which they thought impeded the transmission of the land at Palanca. Besides a set of documents that Chisinau has to transmit, there are problems related to a customs and border guard checkpoint working in the vicinity, issues related to smuggling, road repair and maintenance, and deployment of emergency vehicles and equipment. In July 2001, Moldova's Parliament ratified the Border Treaty with Ukraine, under which Moldova ceded a 7.77km portion of road and 18ha of adjacent land to Ukraine.
