UDMR opposes facilitation of Romanian citizenship granting procedure for Moldovans
The president of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) Marko Bela expressed his disagreement about the measurers adopted by the Government of Romania, aimed at facilitating the obtaining of Romanian nationality by the citizens of Moldova, describing them as very populist and rash, NewsIn agency reported, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
“I remember that the idea of the Hungarian authorities to grant dual nationality to the Hungarians living in other states met with a lot of resistance several years ago,” Marko Bela said, stressing yet that no parallel can be drawn between the two situations.
“The problem of the Moldovans must be fixed where they live, while we must find solutions to contribute to the solving of their problems,” the UDMR president said, adding that the granting of nationality is not a ‘solution’ in this case. “We made out homework because we are an organization that represents a minority community and we know all the aspects of this problem, but, in general, this study was not made in Romania and much more serious debates are needed than the present ones,” Marko Bela said.
The Government of Romania decided to simplify the procedure for regaining and granting Romanian nationality to the former Romanian citizens and their descendents up to the third degree by amending the Romanian nationality law of 1991 following a request made by President Traian Basescu. The emergency ordinance on nationality for the citizens of Moldova is to be adopted by the Parliament of Romania.
Earlier, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of Romania asked that the ordinance be discussed as an emergency in the Parliament. “We cannot deprive our brothers from over the Prut of the blood right and land right offered by the nationality law. Until now, the obstacles were more bureaucratic and they hindered a large number of Moldovan nationals, who are also Romanians born on Romanian soil, to Romanian parents,” the PSD president Mircea Geoana said then.
