A boy aged two from Rezina village of Ungheni district was rushed to the hospital in a serious condition after a cupboard fell over him. The incident happened when the parents were carrying out repair works in the house and left the child unsupervised for a while. Maria Rotaru, deputy head of the Ungheni district hospital, has told IPN that the boy suffered brain injury and a concussion of the first degree.
The doctor said the sustained injuries may have long-term repercussions as the child received a severe blood to the head. Such cases occur because the parents do not take care of the things around the child, which can pose a real danger. “There can be dangerous situations for children when the parents do not take measures to prevent home accidents,” said the doctor.
The boy was taken to the Mother and Child Center in Chisinau by the Aviasan Service for complex medical examinations. He was admitted to the neurosurgery section. Neurosurgeon Vadim Scutaru said the boy will receive treatment at the hospital for a week, which will be then continued at home.
This May, a child aged ten months died after he was crushed by a TV set in the house. A similar incident happened last year, when a child of one year and two months died after the nightstand with the TV set fell over him.
According to the National Health Management Center, 2,900 children aged between 0 and 5 suffered injuries in Moldova in 2012. A study carried out within the REPEMOL project “Regionalization of the pediatric emergency and intensive care services in Moldova” showed that only 66% of the parents realize the risks to which their children are exposed in the house.
