A boy aged two from Straseni district was taken to the hospital in a serious state with poisoning. The child was found by parents semi-conscious and was rushed to the hospital. According to the parents, they painted the stove and heated it in the evening, and then laid the child to sleep near the stove.
Ala Condrea, head of the Emergency Admissions Division of the Balti Municipal Hospital, said that the boy poisoned himself with acetone that evaporated from the paint when the fire started to burn. The child is now out of danger. Acetone is a very dangerous substance that can have serious consequences when paint is used during repair works. The parents must take precautionary measures and put the children to sleep in other rooms, where they are safe.
According to the doctors, the kids poison themselves at home in two situations: when the parents know the danger and ignore it, and when the parents don’t realize the danger. “In order to avoid cases of poisoning at home, the parents must realize the risks and continuously supervise the children,” said the doctor, underlining that if incidents happen, the parents must take the children out and call an ambulance.
According to a study made within the national communication campaign “A danger-free home for your child!”, conducted by the Moldovan-Swiss REPEMOL project “Regionalization of the pediatric emergency and intensive care services in Moldova”, only 24.5% of those surveyed realize the risk of the children poisoning themselves with toxic substances available in the house or yard.
