Two-year-old dies struck by car moving backward

A girl aged two years and five months from Orhei, who was left to play in the street unsupervised, died when she was hit by a car moving backward.

The Orhei Police Inspectorate said the vehicle was going out of a courtyard when the child was struck. The driver couldn’t have seen the girl in the rear-view mirror. Eyewitnesses said the parents were in the court of their house, not far from the place of the accident, but didn’t manage to save the child. She died on the way to the hospital.

Contacted by IPN, Irina Burdujan, press officer of the Orhei Police Inspectorate, said the girl died because the parents didn’t supervise her.

This is not a single case. Last year, several children younger than five were crushed under the wheels of cars moving backward. Such tragedies can be avoided if essential rules are obeyed. The parents must supervise the small kids when they are playing and prevent them from approaching the roadway or other dangerous places.

It is very important that the persons looking after children teach them to stay still when a car goes into or out of a courtyard, while the drivers are urged to make sure that there is no child behind when maneuvering backward. The rear-view mirror cannot help if a child is right behind the vehicle.
