Two professional table tennis players and two accomplices, who are suspected of rigging the results of a number of tennis matches played in Moldova and abroad, were brought to justice. They face fines of up to 200,000 lei or at most three years in jail, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the culprits convinced tennis players to arrange particular scorelines or to have a particular behavior at national and international table tennis competitions in exchange for money. With the results being prearranged, these won thousands of euros at betting shops.
The prosecutors also determined that the culprits acted in collusion with coaches and players from abroad, including from Romania and Ukraine. This group of persons permanently exchanged information and managed thus to fix the results of dozens of sports events.
The four, who include a coach of the Moldovan Tennis Federation, were arrested on November 28, 2017.
