Two representatives of a political bloc were detained in Balti in the criminal cases concerning illegal financing of political parties and money laundering. They are suspected of offering money to electors so that these vote in favor of a candidate contending in the runoff presidential election, IPN reports.
According to the National Anticorruption Center, the two suspects were detained for 72 hours and are to be taken into custody.
People who offer money to influence the results of an election risk from one year to five years in prison and a fine of over 50,000 lei. The illegal financing of political parties from prohibited sources is punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of over 67,000 lei. In order to ensure the recovery of damages, the law enforcement agencies can seize the person's property.
The persons are released from contravention liability if they denounced the deed or actively contributed to the discovery or countering of electoral corruption.
