The deputy head of the Murders and Serious Crimes Division of the Chisinau General Police Commissariat’s Criminal Police Department and the Department’s deputy head were arrested for asking for US$10,000 bribe. The arrest was made by officers of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office. On May 14, the prosecutors officially charged the two with passive corruption. According to the prosecutors, on May 9 the two police officers asked for US$50,000 from two foreigners for not holding them accountable for trafficking in human beings. When the foreigners refused to pay, the policemen reduced the sum to US$10,000. On May 9, the officers received the first tranche of US$2,200, while on May 11 they were arrested. They are now in the remand unit of the Anticorruption Center and will be under arrest for 30 days.
