Two persons attempted to transmit US$250,000 to an MP of the Pro-European Coalition, through an intermediary, for him to leave the faction of which he forms part. The National Anticorruption Center and the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office didn’t reveal the name of the MP and his faction, IPN reports.
The suspects were arrested when they were transmitting the money to the intermediary. The National Anticorruption Center said this corruption attempt has nothing to do with the decision of MP Iurie Bolboceanu to leave the Democratic faction.
An investigation was launched following notifications from members of Parliament. The prosecutors established that the MP was to receive a part of the money initially and the rest after he made the announcement about his defection from the coalition.
One of those arrested is a former employee of the Ministry of the Interior. He held the post of adviser there. It’s not yet known who the money belongs to.
The persons were put under arrest for 72 hours. If they are found guilty, they will serve jail terms of 6 to 12 years.
