A man and a woman from a town in northern Moldova came to the local police station to turn in 1,000 lei each, which they allegedly received from a certain political party in exchange for their votes in the upcoming local elections.
The General Police Inspectorate said the two citizens surrendered the cash on their own initiative because they “realized the illegal nature” of vote buying.
The police reiterate that vote buying and electoral clientelism is a crime. Under the Criminal Code, corruption of voters is punishable by fines ranging from 37,500 lei to 57,500 lei or imprisonment from 1 to 5 years in the case of individuals.
Voters are urged to express their will through free voting and to respect all the measures and restrictions established by the normative acts during the elections.
