Two Moldovan political organisations express their concern over the proclamation of independence by the Serbian Kosovo province and urge the authorities not to recognise Kosovo as independent state, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a statement, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) says that it is deeply concerned about the developments in Kosovo and expresses hope that this case will not become a viable precedent for the frozen conflicts existing in Europe. PSD considers that the unilateral proclamation of independence by Kosovo, which is a part of a sovereign state and a member of the UN, without the consent of the constitutional Serbian authorities and of the UN, is a violation of Serbia’s sovereignty, of the Charter of the United Nations, of the Resolution 1.244 of the UN Security Council and of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and can lead to a wave of secessionist processes not only in Europe, but in the whole world. PSD stresses that the adoption of unilateral decisions that attack the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a European state is not the best solution to this conflict and can escalate confrontations. PSD calls on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova to trenchantly state that Moldova does not recognise Kosovo and to promote this position at European and international level. At the same time, the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova “Patria-Rodina” (PSMPR) describes the proclamation of independence by Kosovo as event that will considerably reduce the chances of solving the Transnistrian conflict by preserving Moldova’s territorial integrity. The party calls on the Moldovan authorities to immediately take measures. The party’s management considers that the President of Moldova should call a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the events in Kosovo, while the Moldovan Parliament should examine the given issue and its consequences on the Transnistrian settlement at a special meeting. Also, PSMPR calls on the Moldovan administration not to recognise Kosovo as subject of international law and as member of the UN. Kosovo’s parliament adopted the independence declaration on February 17. When proclaiming independence, Kosovo was under the special administration and control of the UN, in compliance with the Resolution 1.244 of the UN Security Council of June 10, 1999.
