Two out of five deaths around the globe are influenced by environmental factors
Two out of five deaths around the globe are influenced directly or indirectly by environmental factors, a study published by the American environmental magazine “Human Ecology” shows.
Three million tonnes of pesticides, ultraviolet or ionized radiation, smoking, gas emissions, soil degradation, food contamination, and higher resistance to medicine represent the cause in 75% cases of cancer – a disease that kills 6 million people every year, says the magazine.
Air pollutants are also responsible for the death of 3 million people. A quarter of them are children, victims of respiratory viruses and lung diseases. Moreover, smoking is responsible for the deaths of other three million people, through its double actions (active and passive) of a pollutant.
The fact that the Government in Chisinau doesn’t recognize the priority of the problems tied to environment is the main cause for violating the constitutional right to a healthy environment, say the independent evaluators of the National Action Plan for Human Rights.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Constantin Mihailescu, the limited financial sources are the main obstacle for the implementation of environmental policies. Meanwhile, this year may be considered a radical one. It is the first time that the unusable pesticides are being destroyed – an extremely dangerous pollutant.
According to official data, out of 4 thousand tonnes of pesticides estimated to have been left as a Soviet heritage, 2.98 thousand tonnes have been repacked and stored in 32 central warehouses in the country.
