Two NGOs demand to amend Constitution for consolidating statehood

Representatives of the public organizations “Voievod”  and “Urmasii lui Stefan” (“Stephan’s Followers”) condemn the initiative to amend the Constitution of Romania and include a preamble that will expressly provide that the union is the major objective of the Romanian state. In this connection, the organizations suggest modifying a number of laws of the Republic of Moldova, including the Constitution, so as to strengthen the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the state.

In a news conference at IPN, Dumitru Roibu, chairman  of the Youth Movement “Urmasii lui Stefan”, said the decision of the Romanian MPs shows lacks of respect or the Republic of Moldova and the Moldovan people. The application of double standards, when the Romanian state, on the one hand, recognizes the independence of the Republic of Moldova, and, on the other hand, keeps the doors open for the Republic of Moldova to disappear also points to disrespect.

The NGOs suggest amending the law on public associations so as not to allow constituting and running associations that undermine Moldova’s sovereignty and independence and the law on local public administration so that the mayors are obliged to take measures to ban or suspend gatherings that run counter to the current legislation.

“Voievod” and “Urmasii lui Stefan” also demand to amend the law on political parties and introduce the text “against the rule of law principle and the independence of the Republic of Moldova” in the article that bans political parties that plead against the country’s territorial integrity and statehood by their statutes, programs and/or activity. The law on assembly should also be modified so as to ban assemblies and events that are aimed at undermining the sovereignty, independence and territory integrity of the state.

As regards Moldova’s Constitution, the NGO propose that Article 142 (limits of revision) should be modified so that  it is similar to Article 152 of Romania’s Constitution that does not allow questioning the independence, territorial integrity, official language and sovereignty of the state. Currently, the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova stipulates that the provisions concerning the sovereignty, independence and unitary character of the state and the state’s permanent neutrality can be reviewed only by referendum, by a majority of electors’ votes.

The head of “Voievod” Nicolae Pascaru said Moldova has regrettably a weak Parliament and irresponsible politicians who didn’t take decisions in the interests of the state on time. “We hope the future Parliament will include people who will be real patriots of this county and in the election campaign these will attract attention to such important values as the sovereignty, statehood and modern state Moldova,” he stated.

“Voievod” and “Urmasii lui Stefan” will transmit the legislation amendment proposals to all the parliamentary groups, except for the groups of the Liberal Party and the European People’s Party of Moldova that are traitor parties that have nothing to do with the national interests of the Republic of Moldova, according to the NGOs.
