Two more commemorative stones to appear in Chisinau
Two commemorative stones will be set up in front of Gaudeamus Movie Theater in Chisinau, in the place of the old cemetery, where Mayor of Chisinau Carol Schmidt and architect Alexandru Bernardazzi are thought to have been buried, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We have not preserved even the graves of the two parents of modern Chisinau. This is a matter of honor and dignity. We must repair the situation. The building of the Chisinau City Hall and the blocks around, town planning and everything we inherited were the work of the two personalities,” said Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca.
Supposedly, the Theater “40 Years of the Komsomole” that was later renamed Gaudeamus was built in the place where there were the graves of Carol Schmidt and Alexandru Bernardazzi. It is not known if the bodies of the two personalities were exhumed and buried elsewhere.
The commemorative stones will most probably be placed on the alley in front of Gaudeamus. Earlier, the owner of the Movie Theater expressed readiness to support the construction of a monument to architect Alexandru Bernardazzi.
Carol Schmidt had been mayor of Chisinau in 1877–1903. Alexandru Bernardazzi mapped out Chisinau streets in 1850-1860. He designed and constructed the city’s water main and laid out the central park. He designed about 30 buildings in Chisinau, including of the City Hall.
