Two Moldovans drown in Italy
Two Moldovan women, both aged 35, died drowning on Sunday morning, June 21, in the waters of Sottomarina, Venice. Italian media report the women died trying to help their three daughters out of the water, Info-Prim Neo reports.
La Repubblica reports the death of the Moldovans was caused by the strong wind and sea waves. The 15-year-old teenagers were rescued, but their mothers were swallowed by the water. The corpses were secured later.
The dead women's names are Silvia Jalba and Ala Strambeanu.
The tragedy occurred before 9 a.m. The rescuers from Chioggia's port start working on the beach after 9.30. They say the Moldovans went to the water ignoring the warning not to swim if the wind is strong.
Moldova's consul to Italy, Ion Surugiu, says no more details about the case are known so far. The information is checked and will be available later today.
