Two mayors arrested for passive corruption, Update
Anticorruption officers on February 10 arrested the mayors of Bursuc village, Nisporeni, and of Tambula village, Sangerei, on corruption-related charges, the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime says in a communique, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
According to the communique, the mayor of Bursuc asked 1,000 lei from a person in order to help him get a residence visa in the village. The mayor of Tambula asked €1,000 from a company for influencing the results of an auction to lease out plots belonging to the mayor's office. The mayor was caught in the act of taking the money marked 'bribe'.
[Update]: The Center's press service specified the mayor of Bursuc is investigated on the outside, while the other mayor was remanded in custody.
The mayors face up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to 60,000 lei. They will also be banned from holding certain posts and performing certain activities for a period of up to five years.
Three representatives of the local public administration have been arrested this year so far. The mayor of Straseni is investigated for taking €4,000 from a company for accepting the works executed for the mayor's office.
