Two doctors and assistant arrested after death of patient

A surgeon, an anesthesiologist and a medical assistant of the National Clinical Hospital were placed under arrest for 72 hours on suspicion of negligence that led to the patient’s death. A man aged 21 died shortly after he was operated to have his appendix out.

Head of the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office Maria Vieru has told IPN that a criminal case was started over violation, out of negligence, of the rules and methods of providing medical assistance, which resulted in the patient’s death. The culprits face up to three years in jail and could be also banned from holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of two to five years.

Contacted by phone by IPN, the Hospital’s vice director Sergiu Ungureanu said the young man was hospitalized with acute appendicitis and was immediately subject to surgery. “Over three hours after he was transferred to the patient’s room, he suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest. Despite the efforts made to resuscitate him, the young man could not be saved. It is something inexplicable for us,” he stated, adding that this is a tragedy for the hospital and a medical commissions was set up to examine this case. The medical-legal examination is being performed.
