Two die of hypothermia, two suffer from frostbite

A number of persons, among whom a teenage girl, suffered from hypothermia as a result of the cold weather. Two persons from Falesti and Anenii Noi districts were found unconscious on the street. These were in a very serious state and died on the way to the hospital, IPN reports.

The National Center for Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Assistance said two men aged 57 and 64 from Hancesti and Ocnita districts suffered from frostbite. Another seven persons were diagnosed with hypothermia. Among these was a girl aged 15, who was found on the street by passersby at night and these called an ambulance.

According to the Center, all the persons were taken to the hospital in a stable state. Most of the patients with hypothermia were from socially deprived families. Two of these do not have a home and were under the influence of alcohol.

The State Hydrometeorological Center said the weather will grow colder during the next few days. The average temperatures will oscillate between -2 and -6 degrees Celsius during the day and will decline to -15 degrees Celsius at night in northern Moldova.

When it is cold, specialists recommend wearing sufficiently loose boots so as to be able to move the toes. The tight boots increase the risk of suffering from frostbite. The head and hands should be protected from cold because more than one third of the body’s warmth is lost at the extremities. When the temperature decreases, the body needs more energy. Consequently, the caloric intake should be increased, hot beverages should be drunk and alcohol consumption should be avoided.
