Two young men held in Cricova penitentiary No. 4 died the same day. The General Police Commissariat and the Rascani Prosecutor’s Office announced that criminal cases were started over the two incidents. The Department of Penitentiary Institutions launched an internal inquiry, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the Department, at about 15.55 on September 1, a wall section of the former workshop in the prison’s production area fell on a detainee aged 26 and crushed him to death. The prisoner, who got six years and four months in jail, was involved in community service and worked as a sweeper. He had free access to the area.

The second incident happened at about 17.50. In a residential sector of the prison, there was found the body of a 26-year-old detainee, who was sentenced to three years in jail. It is alleged that he died from electrocution. According to witnesses, the prisoner took out an outlet in order to connect it to another commutator.

Medical examiners are to find out the exact causes of death.
