The Supreme Court of Justice sentenced two police officers of the Rascani Police Commissariat to five years in jail each for using torture. The two were also banned from holding posts in the Ministry of the Interior for a period of three years, IPN reports.
According to the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, in the spring of 2008 the two policemen arrested a man and took him to the police station. They kicked and punched the man and then forced him to make self-incriminatory depositions.
In April 2013, the first court acquitted the two police officers and rejected the civil lawsuit filed by the inured party. The prosecution appealed the sentence, considering it illegal. In June 2014, the Chisinau Appeals Court found the two guilty of use of torture and put them on probation for a three-year period. The prosecutors appealed yet this decision to the highest court.
The decision of the Supreme Court of Justice is irrevocable.
