Two children aged 13 and 14 from Bălțați village of Ialoveni district were rushed to the hospital in a serious state following a shell explosion. It happened in the evening of April 21 when the teens were near a bus station on the outskirts of the village trying to disassemble the explosive found in a wood nearby.

Press officer of the Ialoveni Police Inspectorate Silvia Vetcu has told IPN that a woman from the village called the 112 service and informed that two children were injured in a blast. The police and a bomb squad of the Ministry of Home Affairs travelled to the scene. As a result of examinations, it was established that the 47 mm shell that burst was made in Germany and probably remained in the wood since World War II.

The children were taken to the Mother and Child Institute by an ambulance.

Contacted by IPN for details, the Institute’s press officer Maxim Cazacu said the minors were brought in a grave state. They both have multiple injuries and were placed in intensive care.

An investigation is under way to establish all the circumstances of this case.
